Electric Scooter Maintenance
A little regular care goes a long way. Use this checklist to keep your scooter safe, smooth and running for years.
Quick Maintenance Checklist
Start here if you're new to e-scooters. Expand the sections below for full details.
Before Every Ride
Basic safety checks that take under a minute.
- Check tyre pressure & visible damage.
- Make sure wheels & handlebars are aligned.
- Test brakes for quick, smooth engagement.
- Confirm folding mechanism is fully locked.
Every 2–4 Weeks
Deeper checks for regular riders.
- Give the scooter a proper clean.
- Inspect brake pads, rotors & cables.
- Top up lubrication on moving parts (not brakes).
- Re-check all visible fasteners.
After Wet Rides
A few quick steps protect your scooter from water damage.
- Dry the deck and stem before folding.
- Keep the charging port cover closed until fully dry.
- Don’t charge immediately — let it air dry first.
- Wipe hinge points and folding joints dry.
When Storing
Looking after your scooter off the road.
- Store in a clean, dry, ventilated spot.
- Avoid extreme heat or cold.
- Charge battery fully before long-term storage.
Detailed Maintenance Guide
1. Tyre Pressure
1. Tyre Pressure
Check before each ride – usually around 50 PSI for pneumatic tyres.
Proper tyre pressure improves speed, braking and handling, and helps prevent punctures.
What to do
- Before each ride, check that pneumatic (air-filled) tyres are inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure (typically around 50 PSI).
- Use a tyre pressure gauge to measure accurately.
- Use a pump to adjust the pressure as needed.
2. Wheels & Handlebars
2. Wheels & Handlebars
Keep steering aligned and free of obstructions.
What to check
- Make sure the handlebars and wheels are properly aligned and respond accurately to steering.
- Check for any wobble or looseness in the stem or headset.
- Remove debris or dirt from the wheels that could affect movement.
3. Brakes
3. Brakes
Your most important safety system – check regularly.
Before you ride
- Test the brakes to ensure they engage promptly and smoothly.
Inspect the components
- For disc brakes, check pads for wear, cracks or uneven surfaces – replace if needed.
- Inspect brake cables or hoses for fraying, kinks or damage.
- Confirm that the brake lever returns properly and doesn’t feel spongy or stuck.
4. Folding Mechanism
4. Folding Mechanism
Prevent accidental folding while riding.
Before each ride
- Confirm that the folding mechanism is fully locked in the riding position.
- Check locking pins, levers and safety catches for proper engagement.
Ongoing care
- Clean the mechanism to remove dust, grit and debris.
- Lightly lubricate moving parts occasionally to keep operation smooth (avoid excess lubricant).
5. Cleaning & Lubrication
5. Cleaning & Lubrication
Clean correctly and protect moving parts – without hurting brakes or electrics.
Cleaning
- Power off and remove the battery if possible. Always turn the scooter completely off. If your model has a removable battery, take it out and clean it separately with a dry cloth.
- Avoid high pressure water or soaking. Don’t use hoses, pressure washers or submerge the scooter. This can push water into bearings, wiring and the battery compartment.
- Use a damp cloth. Wipe the frame, deck and handlebars with a soft, slightly damp cloth. For tougher dirt, use a bucket of water with mild soap, wring the cloth out well and then wipe.
- Target wheels and undercarriage carefully. Use a soft brush or old toothbrush to remove mud or grit from tyres, wheel hubs and suspension parts. If you rinse the wheels, pour a small amount of water directly onto the rubber only, avoiding axles and brakes.
- Clean brake rotors properly. Use disc brake cleaner or rubbing alcohol. Don’t use soap or oily cleaners on rotors – they reduce braking power.
- Dry thoroughly. Use a dry microfibre towel to remove moisture. Let the scooter sit in a dry, shaded area for at least an hour before charging or riding.
- Protect exposed connections. If you ride in wet conditions often, consider a light silicone grease on exposed electrical connectors and check rubber gaskets for wear.
Lubrication
- Apply a PTFE-containing lubricant to appropriate moving parts such as folding joints, suspension components and headset bearings.
- Avoid getting any lubricant on brake pads, rotors or braking surfaces.
6. Riding in Wet Conditions
6. Riding in Wet Conditions
What your scooter can handle – and what it can’t.
TSC scooters carry an IP (Ingress Protection) rating, which means they’re built to handle rain splashes and wet roads in normal commuting conditions. That’s not the same as being waterproof. The rating covers incidental water exposure — not submersion, standing water, or sustained heavy rain.
What’s fine
- Riding in light to moderate rain.
- Riding through light surface water on sealed paths.
- General wet weather commuting.
What to avoid
- Deep puddles — water can enter through the deck, connectors or charging port.
- Flooded paths or standing water.
- Riding through sustained heavy rain for extended periods.
- Leaving the scooter outdoors without a cover in wet weather.
- Pressure washing — even a rated scooter isn’t designed for direct high-pressure water.
Riding safely in the wet
- Wet roads significantly reduce grip and extend your braking distance — start braking well before you normally would.
- Reduce your speed, especially on corners.
- Watch for painted road markings, metal surfaces and wet leaves — these are slippery even at low speed.
- Keep both hands on the handlebars and avoid sudden acceleration or hard turns.
After riding in the wet
- Dry the deck, stem and hinge points before folding — water pools in these areas and sits against metal.
- Keep the charging port cover firmly closed until the scooter has fully dried out.
- Don’t charge immediately after heavy rain exposure. Let the scooter dry in a ventilated area first.
- Wipe down the brake levers and check that the brakes still engage cleanly.
7. Storage
7. Storage
How and where you store your scooter matters.
Environment
- Store your scooter in a clean, dry and well-ventilated area.
- Avoid direct sunlight, heavy moisture and extreme temperatures.
Battery care
- Charge the battery to full before longer-term storage.
- Don’t leave the battery fully drained for long periods.
8. Maintenance Schedule
8. Maintenance Schedule
Simple schedule to keep you on top of everything.
Regular checks (about every 2 weeks)
- Give the scooter a general inspection for cleanliness and obvious wear.
- Confirm all key components (tyres, brakes, folding mechanism, lights) are functioning properly.
Monthly tasks
- Do a more thorough wash and dry of the scooter.
- Check and adjust tyre pressures.
- Reapply lubrication where needed (not on braking surfaces).
Periodic maintenance
- Inspect cables, fasteners and any chains or belts for wear or looseness.
- Tighten or replace components that show damage or excessive play.
For complex repairs or if you’re unsure about any maintenance task, it’s best to consult a professional technician or contact our team. Proper maintenance keeps you safe, improves performance and extends the life of your scooter.
